Excavation

This series really began as I thought about the pure joy of “digging” as a kid. I used to dig all the time. It was wonderful imagining what treasures you might discover. The action of digging was such a pleasure; the feel of the dirt on your hands and the temperature change as it got cooler, the farther down you dug. I think that is one reason I love gardening so much, for the pleasure of digging in the earth. I then began to research the various reasons people dig; to find artifacts and expose ways of life in the past, quarrying and mining to remove minerals, metals or other raw materials, prepare for construction, create fortifications and irrigation and finally to search for fossils or rocks.  I used these purposes as inspiration for my paintings.
